The Subnautica 2 Tadpole changed my entire playthrough. I spent the first 6 hours swimming everywhere like a fool, getting attacked by hostile fish in open water, before I realized this little egg-shaped submarine was sitting right there in my blueprint list waiting to be built.

If you’re playing Subnautica 2 early access right now, the Tadpole is the single most important vehicle in your early game. It protects you from predators, lets you dive deeper safely, and turns the brutal open ocean into a manageable exploration zone. Here’s exactly how I built mine in under 2 hours – and the mistakes you should avoid.

Quick Answer: How to Get the Subnautica 2 Tadpole

Short version – you need to find 3 Tadpole fragments scattered around the early biomes, build a Vehicle Bay at your base, and gather titanium, lubricant, lead, and power cells. Total time investment is about 2 hours if you know where to look. The full guide below covers every step.

What the Subnautica 2 Tadpole Actually Does

The Tadpole is a one-person submersible designed for early-game exploration. It’s not as fancy as the vehicles you’ll get later, but it does three critical things that change how you play.

First, it protects you from most hostile fauna. Open-water predators that one-shot you while swimming will mostly ignore the Tadpole. You can drive past creatures that would otherwise force a long detour.

Second, it lets you go deeper without worrying about oxygen. The Tadpole has its own oxygen supply, which means you can stay submerged for much longer than your standard swimming oxygen tank allows.

Third, it doubles as a portable storage container. You can stash resources inside it during expeditions, which solves the inventory problem most new players struggle with in the early game.

Where to Find Subnautica 2 Tadpole Fragments

Subnautica 2 Tadpole

You need 3 fragments to unlock the Tadpole blueprint. Each one is scanned with your Scanner tool. Here is exactly where I found mine.

The first fragment spawns near the Lifepod crash zone, about 80-100 meters south of your starting position. Look for a small wreckage cluster with some debris scattered around. The fragment looks like a curved metal piece sitting on the sand floor.

The second fragment is in the Kelp Forest biome, roughly 200 meters east of the Lifepod. Swim through the kelp and look for a partially buried hull section. The fragment is usually wedged between rocks – bring your light because it’s easy to miss in the dim kelp.

The third fragment is harder to find. It’s deeper, around 90 meters down in a small underwater cave system southwest of the Lifepod. The cave entrance is hidden behind a coral formation. Once inside, the fragment is on a ledge near the cave’s main chamber.

If you can’t find fragments in these exact spots, check nearby. Subnautica 2 spawns fragments in approximate locations rather than fixed coordinates, so your save file might have them slightly displaced.

Building Your Vehicle Bay First

Before you can craft the Subnautica 2 Tadpole, you need a Vehicle Bay at your base. This is where I wasted 30 minutes on my first run because I didn’t realize the Vehicle Bay had its own blueprint requirement.

The Vehicle Bay needs 3 titanium ingots, 2 lubricant, and 1 lead. Titanium you can find easily in the shallow biomes. Lubricant comes from creepvine seed clusters in the Kelp Forest. Lead is the tricky one – it’s in deeper limestone outcrops, around 50-70 meters down.

Place your Vehicle Bay on a flat seafloor area with at least 4 meters of clearance on all sides. The Tadpole needs space to spawn. I made the mistake of building mine too close to a cliff and had to demolish and rebuild.

Crafting the Subnautica 2 Tadpole

Once you have all 3 fragments scanned and the Vehicle Bay built, interact with the Vehicle Bay terminal. The Tadpole crafting recipe requires:

  • 2 titanium ingots (5 titanium total combined)
  • 1 lubricant
  • 1 lead
  • 2 power cells
  • 1 glass

Glass you craft from quartz at any fabricator. Power cells need silver ore and copper, both found in shallow rock outcrops. The whole crafting process takes about 5 minutes once you have the materials.

Best Tadpole Upgrades for Early Game

The Subnautica 2 Tadpole has upgrade modules you can install at the Vehicle Bay. Two are worth getting early.

The Hull Reinforcement module costs 1 titanium and 2 plasteel. It significantly increases your damage resistance against medium predators. I died once before installing this, never died in the Tadpole after.

The Storage Expansion module adds 4 inventory slots inside the Tadpole. Costs 2 titanium and 1 silicon rubber. This is essential for longer expeditions where you collect a lot of resources.

Skip the Speed module for now – it costs power cells you need for actually running the Tadpole. Save speed upgrades for the late game.

Common Subnautica 2 Tadpole Mistakes to Avoid

After 30 hours with the Tadpole, here are mistakes I see new players make constantly.

Don’t leave the Tadpole parked in open water overnight. Hostile creatures can damage it when you log off and back on. Park it inside your base’s vehicle bay or in a sheltered cove.

Don’t forget to repair the Tadpole. Damage accumulates from minor collisions you don’t even notice. Craft a Repair Tool and check the Tadpole’s hull every few hours of gameplay.

Don’t dive past 200 meters in the Tadpole. It’s not rated for deep pressure. The hull starts taking damage automatically below 200m depth. You need later vehicles for deep exploration.

Don’t use the Tadpole as a battering ram. The hull damage from ramming creatures often costs more in repairs than just shooting them with your weapon.

My Honest Take on the Subnautica 2 Tadpole

After 30 hours of Subnautica 2 across multiple saves, the Tadpole is the moment the game clicks. Before you have it, the ocean feels hostile and overwhelming. After you have it, exploration becomes fun and strategic.

If you’re struggling with the early game, drop everything and prioritize the Tadpole. Build a basic shelter, gather your titanium and copper, hunt those 3 fragments, and get this submarine in the water. Your gameplay experience improves dramatically the moment you have it.

I genuinely think Unknown Worlds should make the Tadpole more obvious to new players. Right now too many people quit Subnautica 2 in the first 5 hours because they don’t realize this vehicle is available so early.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to build the Subnautica 2 Tadpole?

About 2-3 hours of gameplay if you know what you’re doing. First-time players usually take 5-6 hours because they’re hunting fragments inefficiently. Use this guide and you should be in the water within 2 hours.

Can the Subnautica 2 Tadpole go in caves?

Most caves yes, but some narrow passages are too tight. Park outside the cave entrance and swim in for the tight sections. The Tadpole’s compact size makes it better for caves than later vehicles.

Does the Subnautica 2 Tadpole have weapons?

No. The Tadpole is purely defensive. You can still use your handheld weapons while inside the Tadpole through the open hatch, but the submarine itself has no offensive capabilities.

Where do I park the Subnautica 2 Tadpole at my base?

Build a Vehicle Bay attached to or next to your main base. The Tadpole docks automatically when you drive it into the bay. Docked Tadpoles also recharge their power cells from your base’s power supply.

Is the Tadpole worth it if I’m playing Subnautica 2 multiplayer?

Absolutely. In co-op, each player can build their own Tadpole. Two players in Tadpoles can explore much faster than one player searching alone. It also makes leviathan encounters survivable when you have a buddy nearby.

Final Thoughts

The Subnautica 2 Tadpole is the early game’s most important upgrade. Build it as your first priority once you have a basic base set up. The 2-3 hour investment pays back tenfold in saved time, reduced deaths, and just plain enjoyment of the game.

If you found other good Tadpole fragment locations or have your own tips, drop them in the comments. The early access community is figuring this game out together. Back to my own playthrough now – the Wakemaker is calling and the Tadpole is fully fueled.
